Asphalt-concrete Reinforcement

Disperse reinforcement of asphalt concrete roads with basalt fiber is a rather new application, which claims to be approved at the legislative level, as one of the main requirements for the design of new roads and the implementation of repair works at the already executed projects.

Technobasalt-Invest, LLC taking care of national infrastructure, has created a special kind of fiber RBR-18-T16/5, which significantly increases the quality of different types of asphalt concrete. Together with the National Transport University, we have conducted a number of studies on the physical and mechanical properties of asphalt concrete, developed a technology for the use of basalt fibers and are ready to provide specific recommendations for achieving aimed results.

Adding of basalt fiber in the amount of 0,3% -0,6% of the dry mix during the reinforcement of the bottom coarse-grained layer of asphalt concrete type B (B-40) and the top fine-grained layer of asphalt concrete type B (B-20) reduces the rutting formation in 1.3-1.5 times. Adding of basalt fiber in the amount of 0.4% of the dry mix improves compressive strength:

  • of the coarse-grained layer at t = 0 °C by 35%, at t = 20 °C by 34%, at t = 50 °C by 18%, comparing with the standard;
  • of the fine-grained layer at t = 0 °C by 26%, at t = 20 °C by 44%, at t = 50 °C by 49%, comparing with the standard.

 

The use of basalt fiber in the amount of 0,3% -0,6% of the dry mineral mix of gravel-mastic asphalt concrete allows to reduce the rutting formation in 1.3-1.5 times compared with the sample with cellulose fiber.

  • 0.4% of the basalt fiber from the dry mineral mix increases the compressive strength at t = 0 °C by 7%, at t = 20 °C by 19%, at t= 50 °C by 26% comparing with the sample with cellulose fiber.
  • 0.4% of the basalt fiber from the dry mineral mix increases the tensile strength at bending at t= 0 °C   by 13%, at t= 20 °C by 10% compared with the sample with cellulose fiber.

 

Consequently, the use of basalt fiber increases crack resistance, resistance to landslides, resistance to the formation of ruts and increases the durability of road surface.

 

While the State Standard of Ukraine “Asphalt mixes and road asphalt concrete with basalt fiber” is being prepared in scientific rooms, basalt fiber is already actively used and proves economical and technical expediency of application in real projects: Cherkassy bridge; Kyiv, Mechanizatoriv, st., International str.
